Happiness is Infectious
At the end of March 2025 I was returning to Japan from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. I had been attending a week-long team development workshop that had left me feeling very happy. After checking in and passing through immigration, I went into the men's room. As I was leaving, a young airport worker was coming in to clean the toilets. He greeted me with a warm smile, saying "Good morning, sir". I said good morning back to him.
I took a few steps and then stopped. Something extraordinary had happened. I have been in many airports, but have never been greeted so warmly by airport staff, let alone someone whose job is to clean the toilets. I decided to go back in to thank him.
For a moment he looked startled, almost as if I was going to complain about something. I told him that I wanted to thank him for greeting me in such a warm way, and he explained that today was the Eid festival following the Ramadan period of fasting. He was feeling very happy. I then asked him if I could make a video of him and he agreed.
I shared with him in the video a beautiful moment I had just experienced while waiting in the check-in line. A young family of four had caught the attention of the people around. The parents were interacting beautifully with the children, who were adorable. I told them, "You're a great team. You're making everyone happy!" The little girl had to ask her mother to explain what I had said. Then, when she understood, she looked at me, and asked, "Why"? "Because you are happy," I replied.

幸せは伝染する
2025年3月末、私はマレーシアのクアラルンプールから日本への帰路についていました。1週間にわたる「チーム開発ワークショップ」に参加した後で、私の心はとても満たされていました。
チェックインと出国審査を済ませ、手洗いに立ち寄りました。出ようとしたその時、若い清掃スタッフの男性が入ってきました。彼は私を見ると、あたたかい笑顔でこう声をかけてくれました。
"Good morning, sir."
私も挨拶を返しました。
"Good morning."
数歩歩き出したところで、私はふと立ち止まりました。何か特別なことが起きた気がしたのです。これまで多くの空港を利用してきましたが、あんなにも心のこもった挨拶を受けたことは一度もありませんでした。ましてや、トイレ清掃の方からあのような笑顔を向けられたことなど、かつてなかったのです。
私は彼にお礼を言いたいと思い、引き返しました。私が戻ると、彼は一瞬驚いたような、まるで私が何かクレームでも言いに来たのではないかと身構えるような表情を見せました。
しかし、私が「あたたかい挨拶にお礼を伝えたかっただけなんです」と説明すると、彼は安堵した様子で事情を話してくれました。今はラマダン明けの「イード」というお祭りの日で、とても幸せな気分なのだそうです。私が「動画を撮らせてもらってもいいですか？」と尋ねると、彼は快く応じてくれました。
動画の中で、私はチェックインの列で起きたばかりの素敵な出来事を彼にシェアしました。ある4人家族が、周囲の人々の目を引いていたのです。両親の子どもたちへの接し方は素晴らしく、子どもたちも本当に愛らしい様子でした。
私はその家族にこう声をかけました。
"You're a great team. You're making everyone happy!" （すばらしいチームですね。みんなを幸せにしていますよ！）
小さな女の子は、私が何と言ったのか母親に尋ねていました。意味を理解すると、私を見て不思議そうに聞きました。
"Why?" （どうして？）
私はこう答えました。
"Because you are happy." （あなたたちが、幸せそうだからだよ）
